Know Thyself
Know Thyself
The Oracle at Delphi was situated in the Temple of Apollo on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in central Greece.
Kings, lawmakers, and ordinary citizens traveled from all over the Mediterranean to ask her advice on everything from wars to laws, from health to prophecies.
The injunction Know Thyself was written over the entrance to the temple, seemingly to remind visitors of their mortality.
But the Greek philosopher, Socrates, knew it went far deeper than that…
He transformed the Delphic maxim, Know thyself, from a simple warning about mortal limitations into the foundation of Western philosophy and ethics. For Socrates, self-knowledge was not just a moral duty, but the ultimate purpose of life.
He went so far as to say: “The unexamined life is not worth living”
